Allyns’ HR Origin Story
By: Allyns Melendez
I Thought HR stood for “Home Room”
It was 1997. I was still in high school, sitting across from a career counselor who asked me a question that would change my life:
“Do you know what HR is?”
I thought about it. The only acronym I knew was HOME ROOM. That was literally my answer.
She didn’t laugh me out of the room. Instead, she leaned in and said something that hooked me immediately: “You’d always know everybody’s secrets.”
Wait….that’s a real job?
That was the beginning. I had stumbled into the most fascinating corner of the workplace I could have imagined
Every day I was getting to know people. I watched how companies responded when things got hard. Sometimes they tried to support people. Sometimes they tried to get them fired. Both taught me something.
I learned about human behavior in ways no classroom could have prepared me for. I learned about training, about conflict, about compliance, about what companies and people value and what happens when those that don't align. I was fortunate enough to work with some amazing people along the way who have become mentors. They showed me what it looked like to do this work with integrity and grit.
And somewhere in all of it, I realized this wasn’t just a job. It was a calling.
That moment is exactly why I built HR Transformed®. Small and mid-sized businesses deserve HR support, but most of them are trying to figure it out on their own, without the time, resources, or expertise to do it well. That’s where we come in. We do it so they don’t have to.
I wake up every day grateful to do what I love. And yes, I really do love it.
Looking back, I think about that career counselor often. She could have shifted me to some other position or industry. Instead, she saw something I didn’t know I could do.
Turns out she was right. You do learn everybody's secrets. But what she didn't tell me is that the real job is being someone people trust with them. That's what HR, done right, actually is.
